Surface – Windows 8 powered tablets by Microsoft
Following the recent launches of Windows 8 powered tablets by other manufacturers; Microsoft has decided to enter the tablet markets with their own products. At the special event at Los Angeles, Microsoft announced their two new tablets under the name of “Surface”. One of these tablets, powered by Intel’s 3rd Generation of Core processors, runs on Windows 8 Pro version.
Microsoft Surface Pro

It is equipped with Intel’s latest third generation Ivy Bridge processors core CPU with a minimum clock speed of 1.6 GHz. It will be coming in 64 GB and 128 GB variants. It runs on Microsoft’s yet to be launched, Windows 8 Pro OS which is equipped with the very innovative metro UI.
10.6 inches clear display HD technology is used, featuring digital ink sampled at 600 dpi. So it is very smooth and clear. It reproduces vibrant colors and that too, without stressing the battery a lot. The screen is guarded by the highly protective Gorilla Glass 2.0.
The tablet is 13.5 mm thick and weighs around 903 g. Standard features like USB 3.0, micro SDHC, Mini HDMI port are present here also. 2 x 2 MIMO antennae (for wireless communications) are also present to boost wireless performance and range. It has a 42 watt hour battery. Front and rear HD cameras (with unknown specifications) are present.
The tablet seems to have very premium looks and build quality, thanks to Microsoft innovative ‘VaporMg’ case. And how could Microsoft launch a tablet without a smart cover, when Apple had one? This competition, led to the launch of this exciting new smart cover with these Surface tablets. This cover has a touch keyboard and touch pad embedded on the back side, so that you can use it for typing purposes, when it is not ‘covering’ the tablet. Moreover, the color scheme of Windows 8 UI also changes automatically to match the color of the smart cover attached to the tablet. This cover also sets the tablet to power off when you fold it over the screen. All these features are packed in just 5mm thickness.
Price and Availability
Unfortunately, nothing was said about the availability or the pricing of this tablet, though these tablets are expected to launch just after the launch of Windows 8, i.e either Q4 2012 or Q1 2013. This model of the tablet running Windows 8 Pro is expected to cost around Rs. 40,000/-
It is expected that this deadly combination of hardware and software will please the users with its snappy performance and killer looks. The new UI of Microsoft Windows 8 and the amazingly touch sensitive typing cover is definitely its USP.
